NLP MindFrame Patterns©
‘TLS Associates Ltd has developed and adapted individually tailored Models of Excellence to help you achieve your specific and desired outcome’
NLP MindFrame Patterns© is about being in the right frame of mind to consistently achieve your desired outcome in every situation.
MindFrame Patterns© provide the structure so that you can respond in the way you want to respond in every circumstance.
MindFrames© offer a consistent approach to underscore the best possible state you can be in to achieve your goals, by giving you access to all the resources you need to succeed.
TLS Associates Ltd has developed a hugely successful model by drawing on the essential components of NLP into a framework that is useable and readily accessible to all.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming originates from modelling excellence. NLP MindFrame Patterns© uses the Model of Excellence that is NLP and creates a structure and series of tools so that everybody can access the opportunities for personal development and growth.
As well as using the key learnings and insights from NLP as a baseline, MindFrame Patterns© works on the presupposition that we all have the elements of excellence necessary to create our own Models of Excellence.
Being in the right frame of mind to achieve our objectives is crucial. Very few of us can do it by willpower and persistence alone. NLP MindFrame Patterns© offers a step-by-step guide on how to access your vast resources to get the results you want.
This is an entirely subjective experience and you may wish to use only small parts to effect the change you need. There is no prescriptive guidance on what you need as an individual. You must decide that for yourself.
We do recommend going over all of the processes to decide how it will work best for you and whether or not to experience every NLP MindFrame Pattern© in full. Most importantly, it is an enjoyable and revealing experience.
NLP MindFrame Patterns©: In a Nutshell
NLP MindFrame Patterns© consist of Earth, Water, Fire and Air.
- Earth is our Internal State, our Emotions, our Heart. It is our identity, why we are the way we are.
- Water is our Internal Process, our Thinking, our Head. It is how we do what we do.
- Fire is our External Behaviour, our Actions, our Physicality. It is what we do.
- Air is our Deep Unconscious, our Essential Self.
On a Conscious level these are:
- Earth = Values
- Water = Beliefs
- Fire = Behaviours
We apply the following NLP patterns on an unconscious level:
- Change Patterns, or Meta Programs (how we process events)
- Storage Patterns, or Sub Modalities (how we encode our experiences)
- Strategy Patterns, or Strategies (what we do)
By changing any and all of these parts (see explanation below) our MindFrames© can be transformed. However, every MindFrame© must be put into context.
Contexts are:
- Earth: Work, Rest and Play
- Water: Goal Setting, Goal Getting, Goal Attaining
- Fire: Self, Sex, Social.
By applying the right MindFrame© – that is the frame of mind to consistently achieve our specific and desired outcome – in the right situation we can achieve whatever we desire.
How it Works
NLP MindFrame Patterns© originated from the state, process, behaviour model. That is the NLP structure that recognised human beings as having three main components to function as we do: Internal State, Internal Processes and External Behaviour.
The Internal State is our Heart, the essence of who we are and think we are. It is where we house our Values, our essential self. This is the seat of the emotions.
Internal Processes is our Head, the process of how we think. It is where we house our Beliefs, the guiding rules of our lives. It is about the process of how we do what we do.
External Behaviour is our Action, the behaviour that we demonstrate. It is how we act that portrays what we do. It is the demonstration of our behaviour.
NLP MindFrame Patterns© use these propositions as a starting point. We link these to the elements. Internal State becomes Earth, representing our roots, how we are grounded, where we are coming from.
Internal Process becomes Water, representing process and movement, how we move along existing patterns to get what we want. The motion of water along existing channels represents how we follow established pathways to do what we do.
External Behaviour becomes Fire, that is the outward demonstration of who we are. In NLP we believe Perception is Projection. That is, you will outwardly demonstrate what you believe and value, consciously or unconsciously. Fire is the flickering beacon that indicates who we are.
The final element is Air. This is concerned with the deep unconscious. We will return to this later. MindFrames© are primarily concerned with Earth (Values), Water (Beliefs) and Fire (Behaviour).
MindFrames© uses the following definition of each area:
- Values are the things that are most important to us. The are the things that we spend most of our time, money and energy moving either towards or away from.
- Beliefs are the rules which govern the way we live our lives. They are neither true nor false.
- Behaviour is the physical manifestation of what we do.
Conscious Frames
Values, Beliefs and Behaviour are rated as the Conscious side of ourselves. Although we may not be consciously aware of what our highest values are, it is straightforward to find out and does not require much unearthing. Therefore they are nearly always near enough to the surface to unearth so can be classified as Conscious. Likewise, we are nearly always aware of what our Beliefs are and our Behaviours can be captured and observed consciously, if not always undertaken consciously.
Necessarily, there is some overlap between the Conscious and Unconscious. MindFrames© differentiates in order to simplify our understanding of how we work. Once we begin working with our MindFrames©, such distinctions are not necessary. Flexibility is key.
Why are Values, Beliefs and Behaviours so important? Our Values are who we are, the epitome of our ego, our self. Beliefs are important because they support our Values, they tell us how we do what we do. Behaviours are crucial because they are the only way to verify externally that we are who we say we are. If our Behaviour says different then most likely we are out of alignment, incongruent, and therefore most likely experiencing some problems.
Each of these areas can be changed or re-aligned to get the results we want. MindFrames© recommending changing three parts of each in order to achieve our outcome. It may be that changing only one element will have a domino effect and change everything else. For lasting change, it is likely that more than one element will have to be altered.
We also have to consider the ecology of interfering with one part of the system. In NLP ecology is the study of consequences. It is most likely that if we change Earth or Values there will be a knock-on effect to our Water element, or Beliefs, and Fire, on our Behaviour. So in changing one part it is important to monitor the effect on other parts.
Changing our Values can be straightforward. Remember, we only change anything if it is not working for us. So changing a Value or re-aligning only occurs when it would be to our benefit. For example if you are setting up a new business and accumulating funds quickly is necessary then it would be most helpful if money, or an equivalent, is a high value. If not it may be difficult to accrue a decent income. The money value could be raised in the Values hierarchy to nearer the top, and once achieved, perhaps moved to a lesser priority as family, for example, or other priorities begin to take over.
Similarly, limiting beliefs can be changed simply by recognising whether a belief is useful or not. Beliefs are neither true nor false, so can be altered to suit our outcome.
We tend to think in black and whites, rights and wrongs, off and on. It is easier for our brains to compute situations if we categorise. Therefore, we tend to encode beliefs as being true or false. NLP teaches us to keep an open mind, to approach things in analogue. That is like the hands of a clock, there are gradients. There is neither right or wrong, rather shades of grey.
Finally, behaviours can change, simply by acting in a different way. The simple act of shifting our physiology, changing our voice tone, moving our posture, can have a real effect on our state.
There are some useful NLP techniques which can provide greater insight into how we discover more about our Values, Beliefs and Behaviours and ways of re-aligning or changing these that MindFrame Patterns© adopts. For more information click on the icons on the right hand side. In this brief overview, we will move on to the next layer of MindFrames©, the one where true, lasting change can be affected.
Unconscious
Here we use the unconscious programmes, Change Patterns, Storage Patterns and Strategy Patterns, and apply to our Values, Earth, and our Beliefs, Water. The outcome will be evidenced in our Behaviour, Fire. Change, Storage and Strategy Patterns are the unconscious thought processes that we have and use every time we do anything.
Change Patterns
There are many Change Patterns, however MindFrames© uses nine in keeping with the multiples of three to which this structure adheres (three is a magic number!). In his book, People Pattern Power, Dr Wyatt Woodsmall picks nine change patterns that are most crucial to business change. Because NLP MindFrame Patterns© is based upon Models of Excellence, we refer to this as a best practice model.
- The first is Change. This is concerned with how people view the world. Whether they are sameness, qualified sameness, difference or qualified difference.
- The second is Primary Interest. This determines which is our primary interest: activity, information, people, place or things.
- The third is Information. This is whether we see the big picture or small bits of information. It follows as global, global to specific, specific, specific to global.
- The fourth is Evaluation. This is concerned with how you know you are doing well or otherwise. This can be balanced, external, internal, or internal with external check.
- The fifth is Decision. This is whether you are a primarily visual, auditory, kinesthetic (emotional), or auditory digital (logical). That is whether or not something looks right, sounds right, feels right, or makes sense.
- The sixth is the Motivation. This is whether we are away from, away with towards, both towards and away, towards, or towards with some away.
- The seventh is Motive, whether you are a Power, Affiliation or Achievement person. Within that, you can be more towards or away.
- The eighth category is Activity. This determines whether you think out of necessity or possibility.
- The ninth is Organisation. Are you in time, living in the moment, a free spirit, or through time, more structured and organised?
Once aware of these unconscious patterns we can change, or move them to fit our requirements. It is possible to elicit all of these patterns through listening and observing people in conversation. Change Patterns explain why you are the way you are and why you get the results you get. It is why they closely associated to our internal state, our values, our identity.
In changing our unconscious Change Patterns we can radically change our lives. MindFrames© recommends changing three major Change Patterns, starting with those surrounding our values and then our beliefs. For example, if you believe yourself to be unable to complete a task successfully, changing the Motivation, Motive and Primary Interest patterns for that particular task may make all the difference.
Storage Patterns
Storage Patterns are how we encode and store every event. Our Modalities are our senses: visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, olfactory and gustatory.
Sub modalities, or Storage Patterns, are the component pieces of how we store every memory. How we see them, what colours they are made up, whether it is a movie or still, framed or panoramic and so forth. They are also made up of noises and sounds, as well as feelings. Of crucial importance is where we locate these pictures and sounds and what feelings are associated with them.
Imagine someone you dislike. What do they look like, sound like, and where is the feeling located? Is it large or small? Does it move, vibrate? Is it light or heavy? Where is the picture located in your spatial awareness?
Now imagine someone you like. Ask yourself the same questions. You will probably find that the picture and feelings and sounds are different. This is because we store and encode events in different ways. If we alter these, by shifting the locations, pictures and sounds then our attitude towards them can shift significantly.
If we move these representations around we can make a huge difference to our unconscious patterns and transform our approach. MindFrames© recommends changing three Storage Pattern representations, starting with our values then our beliefs.
Strategy Patterns
On the unconscious side of Fire, or Behaviours, are our Strategy Patterns. This is the process we go through every time we do something. It is a specific order and sequence of internal and external processes or internal and external experiences that consistently produce a specific outcome.
Every Strategy Pattern is made up of a sequence of visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, gustatory or olfactory steps we go through. For example, in buying something from a shop we may see an item, compare it to a visual representation of what we want to buy, check with our auditory digital (logical) side that the price is right, hear ourselves say that it is alright, touch the item to make sure it has the right feel, once again compare the item to the visual representation so that it matches our expectations, and get the feeling we want to buy it.
This process can be broken down every time we undertake a task. It always concludes with a synesthesia, that is a combination of two senses to confirm that is what we will do. That normally consists of seeing and feeling, or hearing and feeling. It is what happens every time we do not want to do something and feel bad about it, or when we are very excited about doing something. We see or hear something and it makes us feel a particular way.
To use strategies in a productive way, we need to first elicit the process that is not working so well for us and then install a process that would work better, often by changing certain steps. For instance a shopaholic will quite often have a two step strategy: see it, compare it to a visual recollection and feel an overriding desire to buy it. Introduce another couple of steps can make all the difference. For example: see it, hear yourself advising caution, see yourself with all the things you already have, and finally, feel good about that. That extended process may then hinder the person from going out and buying things they do not need.
In MindFrames© we recommend eliciting and then installing three strategies that we can use on our values and then our beliefs.
Once practised elicitation and installation is quite simple. We start by asking, what is the first very first thing that happened that made you know that it was time to… was it something you saw, heard or felt? The follow-up question would be, what was the very next thing that happened so that you knew it was totally right to… was it something you saw, heard or felt etc?
Earth, Water and Fire
The patterns above therefore work on a conscious and unconscious level:
- Earth conscious are Values, Earth unconscious programs are: Change Patterns, Storage Patterns and Strategy Patterns
- Water conscious are Beliefs, Water unconscious are Change Patterns, Storage Patterns and Strategy Patterns
- Fire conscious and unconscious are Behaviours
MindFrames© suggests adjusting three elements for each, if necessary. If one change makes all the difference, then fine. Any change needs to be monitored in terms of the whole system.
Air is the deep unconscious and once we begin to make these changes, the connection begins to open up between our conscious and unconscious. It is like a communication channel, an internal dialogue which we can develop. There are internal and external parts. The internal is our deep unconscious self. The external is a collective consciousness.
All MindFrame Patterns© must be context specific. We know how they work. Now we need to know where they work.
Context Specific
Once again we can split into the three categories of Earth, Water and Fire. For each category there are a further three sections. These are:
- Earth. This is our grounding, the practicalities of our everyday lives. The three categories are: Work, Rest and Play.
- Water. This is process, movement, motion that we experience in life. The three categories are: Goal Setting, Goal Getting and Goal Attaining.
- Fire. These are our communications, our external connections. The three categories are: Self, Sex and Social.
So we address our MindFrames© for each specific area. We recommend addressing at least one MindFrame© for each set.
MindFrame Patterns© are entirely subjective and can be developed how the individual sees fit in order to achieve their specific outcome.
It may be that changing one aspect of one MindFrame© effects all others. On the other hand some of us may prefer to change every MindFrame© in every section. Whatever works best.
NLP MindFrame Patterns© can help you achieve the change you want in yourself.
